At the beginning of each worship service, the acolyte brings in the light of Christ into the sanctuary. Acolytes also extinguish the candles at the end of the worship service and lead the ministers out of the sanctuary with the light of Christ burning brightly. During the seasons of Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas, acolytes often assume a special role in worship.
The role of an acolyte can be performed by anyone in the church, including and especially children. Acolytes often wear a special robe for the activity and remain seated beside the altar with the pastor throughout the service.
